Beagles Rescues Pictures - Breed Description

Beagles bear a striking resemblance to Foxhounds. They are small, although bigger than their early predecessors, and have the intelligence, agility and stamina of hound-dogs. If a Beagle looks into your eyes, you will see unflagging trust, unswerving faith and an ardent desire to please you. Beagles have a striking pleading expression of the face. There is no dog to match the Beagle in endurance and courage.

Height: Dogs - 14-16 inches (36-41 cm); females - 13-15 inches (33-38 cm)
Weight: Dogs - 22-25 pounds (10-11 kg); females - 20-23 pounds (9-10 kg)
Life Span: 12-15 years

Two acceptable height variations of the Beagle in America are 13-15 inches and lower than 13 inches at the withers. Beagles feature a compact and sturdy body built. They have well-muscled legs and backs. The chest is deep and roomy, legs are rounded and firmly joined to the shoulders. Tough musculation and intelligence makes them the best hounds in the entire hound-group.

The skull is long and slightly domed, and the muzzle is square and straight. The ears are pendant, and they can be dragged to the muzzle when the dog is excited. The eyes are placed widely apart and are usually brown or hazel. The tail is carried high, but it should not bend over the back. Beagles are often referred to as tail-waggers.

Beagles have a remarkable water-resistant coat. It is rough and it lies close to the body. Beagles occur in different color variations, but the range of color is limited to black, tan (or lemon) and white. There seems to be no limitation as to the proportion of the three colors.

Beagles are very courageous and enduring dogs. They like daily rigorous physical activity and are very sociable. They cannot tolerate loneliness, and always need someone beside them, be it either a human or another Beagle. These dogs are very playful, willing and friendly toward other dogs, but they may display aggression toward cats and other animals. Beagles are wonderful family companions and are excellent with children.

If left alone, Beagles produce plaintive baying sounds, which may be disturbing for neighbors. If you are frequently absent from home, it is better to keep two Beagles in the house. Use a lead when walking your pet, because Beagles have a way of running away for good if they catch a trace or sense an interesting smell. For this reason, Beagles require reliable fencing.
