Beagles are medium-sized dogs, belonging to the hound group. Breed Clubs in Europe accept dogs not exceeding 16 inches high at the withers. The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not accept dogs measuring more than 15 inches high at the shoulder. The club accepts two separate varieties: Beagles standing 10-13 inches high at the withers and those measuring 13-15 inches high at the shoulder. The AKC does not recognize so called Pocket Beagles as they are not related to the Old Pocket Beagle that was popular during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
