Beagles Rescues Pictures - Introduction and History

Beagles originated in England, and they are believed to have appeared after crossbreeding the Harrier and some other local hound dogs. The name of the breed has Celtic roots derived from the Celtic word 'beag', which means 'small'. There is, however, another hypothesis, stating that the name came from the French word 'bueguelle', standing for 'gape throat'. This refers to a specific manner of barking when hunting in packs.

Early Beagles were smaller than their modern descendants were and could easily fit in a pocket. They enjoyed love of English nobilities, and royal hunts always included Beagles. These dogs had an excellent sense of smell, and were second-to-none among other breeds in terms of tracking quail, hares, rabbits and fur-bearing game.

Today Beagles are popular as pets since they are very god-natured and not too picky with respect to the type of living space. They can live both in the city and in the suburb. From their ancestors they inherited an excellent nose and intelligence, the two qualities, which define them as hound dogs. The breed has spread around the world, and now Beagles can be found in any country and on every continent, except maybe for Antarctica.
